SFH International Participates in High-Level Discussions on Antimicrobial Resistance at UNGA2024
At the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA2024), Society for Family Health (SFH), represented by Omokhudu Idogho Group Managing Director, and Yusuf Hassan Wada, Health Policy Officer for the Africa Region, participated in the high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Held on 26th September 2024, this meeting recognised the growing global threat of AMR and emphasised the urgent need for collective action.
The high-level meeting united all member states to approve a concise and action-oriented political declaration addressing AMR. The statement was adopted by consensus, with a shared vision to mobilise political will and drive national, regional, and international actions to tackle the critical challenges posed by AMR.
Under the theme, “Investing in the Present and Securing Our Future Together: Accelerating Multi-sectoral Global, Regional, and National Actions to Address Antimicrobial Resistance,” the meeting featured various segments, including general discussions, multi-stakeholder panels, and a closing session.
On the sidelines of the event, Society for Family Health International held discussions with the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and health ministers from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, The Gambia, and other African countries. These discussions focused on addressing the urgent AMR crisis across human, animal, plant, and environmental sectors. Key issues included promoting equity, improving access, raising awareness, fostering innovation, and enhancing surveillance and capacity building through sustainable financing and investment.
SFH has been actively involved in global efforts to combat AMR since the first high-level meeting in 2016, and this year’s meeting marked a significant milestone in increasing political action, research, and public-private partnerships to address AMR.
