ACT Watch
Outlet survey datasets together with study documentation and a guidance document are available through the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP). This site is a temporary home for the datasets until MAP launches the Repository for Open Access Data (ROAD-MAP) later this year. Datasets are also available on Springer, linked to relevant published articles in the Malaria Journal.
A final series of articles was published in the Malaria Journal as a collection. Paper titles are listed below. The collection was published with a commentary by Dr. Rick Steketee and Dr. Thom Eisele.
- What happened to anti-malarial markets after the Affordable Medicines Facility-malaria pilot? Trends in ACT availability, price and market share from five African countries under continuation of the private sector co-payment mechanism.
- Testing times: trends in availability, price, and market share of malaria diagnostics.
- Do anti-malarials in Africa meet quality standards? The market penetration of non-quality assured artemisinin combination therapies in eight countries.
- Private sector opportunities and threats to achieving malaria elimination in the Greater Mekong Subregion: results from malaria outlet surveys in Cambodia, the Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Thailand.
- Evidence on anti-malarial and diagnostic markets in Cambodia to guide malaria elimination strategies and policies.
- Anti-malarial landscape in Myanmar: results from a nationally representative survey among community health workers and the private sector outlets in 2015/16.
- Insights into the availability and distribution of oral artemisinin monotherapy in Myanmar: evidence from a nationally representative outlet survey.
- The malaria testing and treatment landscape in the southern Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR).
- The malaria testing and treatment landscape in Benin.
- The malaria testing and treatment market in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2013.
- The malaria testing and treatment landscape in mainland Tanzania, 2016.
- Private sector role, readiness and performance for malaria case management in Uganda, 2015.
Finally, the ACTwatch website will remain live for 5 years and contains all study reference documents, as well as various presentations and briefs. You may find particularly useful the multi-country briefs for sub-Saharan Africa (recently updated to include 2016 studies), and the Greater Mekong Subregion. As well, the antimalarial drug and RDT databases were updated with data collected through 2016.
After nearly 10 years of monitoring malaria markets and providing evidence for decision making, the ACTWatch project officially closed. We hope that project data and resources will continue to be used and useful for decision making. These include data and results from over 50 outlet surveys conducted across 12 countries.
